About Me

AL 2011
My name is Alexander B. Rodmann, since more than 4 decades i am working as  musician and guitar-teacher.

Born into an artist-family (my mother was a painter,  an uncle has been graphicdesigner, the brother of my grandpa worked as violinist in the south of france, as well as more other artists around in the family), so i started my carreer as a musician at the late age of 13 by autoditactically learning to play the guitar.

Soon around the age of 14 i started to play in Bands, later on beeing involved in all kinds of Bands and projects, Live and in Studio, mainly as guitarrist and later on also as a drummer (also see my musical miles).

After a couple of years later i got interested in recording-techniques in 1985, so i then learned to play a bit of keyboards as well. All instruments i tought myself  autodidactically.

Meanwhile i am working as musician and guitar-teacher for more than four decades. Very early i soon began to teach playing the guitar as a side-income, thus working as a guitar-teacher also for serveral music-schools around the area of Frankfurt and Bad Nauheim. I worked a couple of years for the kath. educational institution (in Frankfurt/M) dealing with students from between 8 and 72 years (also in groups up to 10 persons) for the last years.

NEWS

You think Music-/Teaching is too expensive?

PianisteA very interesting article by the TONKÜNSTLERVERBANDS BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG E.V. (Musicians association) rules out why every kind of music live or lessons should keep a certain value or payment for the musician. Read here the Article.

Many people not involved closer into the issue of "working music" every so often dont have any clue about what or how much a musician or music-teacher has to work for his job to be able to play an instrument or even to teach it.

To play any instrument takes years, takes loads of investments for instruments, high-schools or lessons. It takes many hours of practising in "sweat and tears" until one reaches a certain stage of ability. To teach an instrument to others is even a same heavy task, as you have to know and learn anything yourself first before you are ablte to teach it...
This all should be honoured and be payed the same to keep a fair balance between musicians and "normal" jobprofiles such as workers, employees or other freelancers.

about

My philosophy is just my way of thinking that developed over so many years and that influences not only my life, but also my way of playing music and what i want to say with it...

AL 2009But at first let me say that i dont want to patronize nobody with what i write here to convince or even force someone to like what i think. It is just a reflection of how i look at things, the world, other people - it´s just my own worldview ... so noone should feel offend in any way with what i write down here :-)

„... there is only good and bad music ...“
(answer by Leonard Bernstein in an Interview
on the question what he thought about Rock ´n Roll)

My philosophy, you could also call it my "life-motto" always was and still is the axiom: „live and let live...“

Regrettably this is a basic way of thinking that seems to die out. Sometimes one may have the impression that less and less tolerance is beeing practised amongst human beeings, beein less and less instead of more.
But maybe this impression is wrong just bended by all of the bad news worldwide about war, terror, hunger, ecological catastrophes, cheat, muder and so on...?

I am asking these questions in one of my songs called "We´re going all the way" which i had produced under the project-synonyme „EL Party X“.

Still even if this may be wrong impression i always tried and still try to step up for a better world, as inequity is something that makes me rage...

Humanity, understanding, love, compassion and mercy are not just words to me, charity not just a thing just once around christmas-time  - i try to live that every day - as good as it is possible to me as an imperfect human beeing.

This is not very easy in these unsilent times, but it´s a conviction, grown by many lessons of life that hit me. So i am much more near to any kind of esoteric teaching of life, for example a philisophy like the Buddhism, more near than to any other kind of religions.
More near to it in the sense of real "Re-Ligio" (= re-connection to source; greece for: "re" again, "ligio(n)" binding), which means "binding-back-to-the-source".
Basically i respect everybody as long as he/she´s a good human beeing, as long as he/she´s good to me. There is good and bad people all over the world in any nation, religion, any race, any colour. Wether you´re good or you´re bad - no matter what nation, religion, colour, race or age you might have - it´s what you make of it every day.

Resulting from my philosophy is also my musical way which has been nothing straight at all: Rock, Pop, Funk, Jazz, Worldmusic, Electronic music, Jazz, Swing and all kinds of other musical styles have come across my way. So i stick to the motto of great Leonard Bernstein: „there is only good and bad music ...“ - and this means worldwide....

So i am gonna do exactly that again and again: play music as good as i can, "... because in universe we ALL are strangers..."

In the year 2007 i visited the Masterclass of famous french Gypsyjazz-Guitarrist "Romane" in Lyon (France)Romane & Bertino, 2007 to extend my knowledge about Gypsyjazz and to learn it new and from source (image right).
Newly inspired by that i began to organize my playing completely new, again practising every day for about 1-2 hours daily.
In 2008 a went to another masterclass given by Stochelo Rosenberg (of the famous Rosenberg Trio) in Augsburg and again in 2012 aother masterclass done by Gypsyjazz-master Angelo DeBarre in Samois (France).
GypsyjazzGuitar Bertino Flyer01 kl
Inspired though my intense training i found new inspiration - as also new musicians. In 2007 i founded the Band "Coeur du Bois" (french. "Heart of the wood"). Eversince we played on  many live-gigs in Jazzclubs and on private occasions. The focus of our group is to play Jazz-Manouche with most autenthic arrangements, but also own original compositions in the style.

Since i´ve been forced by many requests for lessons on Jazz-Manouche, i began to setup my own workshops in the style from 2008.
Due to many discussions with one of my students and also inspired by him i started the writing of a methodbook for Jazz-Manouche. And after a long search for a distributor i finally found within Alfred Verlag in Köln the partner who distributes the book in october 2011. More infos on the book you may read here.

All of my intension and focus meanwhile again is on handmade, creative music, just as i again always wished and wanted it all the years before.

I dont know where the journey of my life will lead me to - but one thing is for sure: that i will play music until the last breath of my fascinating life. As music IS my life...

AL 2010 02
My name is Alexander B. Rodmann. Born into an artist-family (my mother was a painter,  an uncle has been graphicdesigner, the brother of my grandpa worked as violiniste in south of france, as well as more other artists around in the family) i began my carreer as a musician at the late age of 13 by autoditactically learning to play guitar.

Soon around the age of 14 i started to play in Bands, beein involved with all kinds of Bands and projects Live and in Studio, mainly as guitarrist and later on also as a drummer (also see my musical miles).
After a couple of years i got involved into recording-techniques in 1985, i then learned to play a bit of keyboards as well. All instruments i learned autodidactically, tought myself.

My musical experiences have become very versatile ever since with a broad spectre: starting off with Blues and Rock, passing Pop and dancemusic - to get into Jazz and Swing (especially Jazz-Manouche) in the early 80ies. In the beginning 90ies i experimented a lot recording Worldmusic, Trance and Techno in my own little Studio. But using pure technique and thus the diversion of permanent Software-Updates and technical New soon left me behind with disgust and separation, finding back to acoustic music. According to the statement of the great Leonard Bernstein: "... there is only good and bad music...", i finally found back my passion for handmade music in thei nterpretation of Django Reinhardt´s music, the Jazz-Manouche.

Meanwhile i am working as musician and teacher for more than four decades. Very early i soon began to teach playing the guitar as a side-income, thus working as a guitar-teacher also for serveral music-schools around the area of Frankfurt and Bad Nauheim. I worked a couple of years for the kath. educational institution (in Frankfurt/M) dealing with students from between 8 and 72 years (also in groups up to 10 persons).

Today i focus on giving only private lessons and diggin deeper into my own musical projects.

More Infos on my musical carreeryou may read in my biography or in the philosophy that explains a bit of my personal views. In the section musical miles you will find a list of my musical experience in chronologic order.

In the following years between 1999 until around 2005 i produced my own musical ideas in my little private project-studio.

Always been interested in film-scores (i had the opportunity to write music for two little productions for imagefilms and a DVD-project, see discography)elpartyx1_tmbelpartyx4_tmb, but also in modern styles like R&B, Pop and Rock i am still interested.

With electronic music i was very early inspired by bands like Can, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül, Kraftwerk, NEU and Klaus Schulze. Later on Bands like Yello, Brian Eno, Michael Cretu, Cafe del Mar and other artists in the field of Ambient/Trance were added.

elpartyx3_tmbSince my musical roots are mainly been influenced by the guitar-styles of Blues and Rock, i was nevertheless always interested in electronical music. As a musician i am interested in fusions of different musical styes. So this was what i´ve tried with my own musical projects.

Always fascinating with electronical music to me is the fact that a musician is able to create images in the head of the listener, making a "movie run inside peoples brains" while listening to this kind of music.
A sentence said by Boris Blank (Yello) in one of his Interviews. Creating stories, images and fairytales, but always cosmopolitic mixes.
elpartyx2_tmbThis is something that i wanted to create for the listeners of my music: opening up phantasy and creativity vor own ides and images while listening. Telling a story where every listener could creat his own "head-movie" while listening. And as i consider myself as a human beeing beein a "world-citizen" and cosmoplite, maybe my philosophy explains it a little deeper...

But as life is a journey also the musical journey of my life goes on...  since a couple of years i have returned to acoustic music and Cover_CdB_tmb Jazz and Swing especially Jazz Manouche in general.

After long years of working music in the shade of my studio in the dark i again urge to play live in front an audience, as the applause and the communication between musicians and listeners has always been an important part of my music.
Elektronical instruments are a great thing, opening lots of possibilities for musicians to have a complete orchestra or Rhythmgroup in studio at hand... but to play live is something else ...

So this is one of the reasons why i placed my guitar back into focus of my music: to have the direct fun of communication and response of an audience, instead worrying about technical problems, updates and upgrades and other technical difficulties.
Just to pick up the guitar again and to easily play music instantly without worry has become important to me again :-)
